If you have had the privilege of visiting the Mountain West in the fall, it will come as no surprise to you that the Aspens put on an amazing show. Aspen trees are fascinating and visually striking, known for their vibrant foliage and distinctive characteristics. Here are a few things that make them special:
- Leaves: Aspen leaves are typically round or heart-shaped with finely serrated edges. They turn a brilliant yellow in the fall, which makes them stand out in autumn landscapes. They are also referred to as “quaking aspen.” Their leaves shake with the slightest breeze, allowing them to photosynthesize on both sides!
- Bark: The bark of aspen trees is smooth and white or light gray, often with black knots or scars. It can be somewhat reflective in sunlight and tends to peel in thin, papery layers. If you gently rub your hand on the bark you will get a white residue which is shown to be about an SPF 5. The bark also contains acetaminophen. Deer and elk will chew on the bark when they are growing their antlers. Native American people would also chew on the bark if they had a toothache or headache.
- Habitat: Aspens are commonly found in cooler climates and can thrive in a range of environments, from mountain slopes to river valleys. They thrive on south facing slopes so they can soak in those high mountain rays!
- Clonal Groves: One of the most interesting aspects of aspen trees is their ability to reproduce through clonal groves. Aspens can send up new shoots from their root system, creating large groups of genetically identical trees connected by a shared root system. If one of the trees gets sick, the others will send extra nutrients to that tree to try and restore its health. If it starts affecting and weakening the surrounding trees, they will seal off the root system, letting that tree die out. The largest known clonal grove is Pando in Utah, which is estimated to be over 80,000 years old and covers over 100 acres.
The colors of the aspen trees is a highly anticipated event in Park City. We can’t wait to sit back, relax and take in the show! Join us!
