As winter blankets the mountains in a layer of snow, Park City, Utah, becomes a haven for those seeking alternatives to skiing. Join us as we explore the top three winter hikes in Park City – each providing a unique winter experience for different interests and skill levels. Let’s go!
(Mellow) Ontario Mine Trail:
The Ontario Mine Trail is a great trail for families or folks whose legs are fried from skiing. Start with a short climb at the beginning to get out of the parking lot and up into the trees. On a clear day, the vistas are great! When it’s snowing, you are protected in the trees and it feels like you are in a snow globe! This trail covers about 2.5 miles with a manageable 400-foot elevation gain and is a great hike for all ages and experience levels.
(Moderate) Quarry Mountain:
For active and adventurous hikers, Quarry Mountain provides a winter hike that allows you to explore our beautiful Park City landscapes. You can generally complete this hike with microspikes (we offer these)! Microspikes are a great alternative to snowshoeing when there isn’t a ton of snow, or for areas that get packed out quickly. They are also a great option if you plan to stay just on the packed-down trail. This 2.8-mile journey with a 750-foot elevation gain leads to stunning views of Deer Valley and Park City Mountain. Keep an eye out for the local elk herd that hangs out in this area!
(Advanced) Iron Mountain:
Calling all fitness enthusiasts and those seeking a unique winter challenge! Iron Mountain is the ideal choice for an advanced hike, offering a rigorous workout with breathtaking views. This 2.5-3 mile trek features a substantial 1200-foot elevation gain and takes you through beautiful aspen groves and pine forests to a ridge line with panoramic views of Bald Mountain, Jupiter Peak, and Park City Mountain. If you’re looking for an exhilarating adventure, this trail is sure to deliver. Parking can be tricky at this trailhead. Please respect all ‘No Parking” signs to avoid a ticket.
